Reported Crackdown on PTI Members Tests the Rule of Law in KP

PESHAWAR—Reports of arrests, raids, and alleged abductions targeting Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers, office-bearers, and workers have raised serious concerns about the rule of law in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The situation stands out because PTI itself leads the provincial government. Some members have reportedly escaped such attempts, while others describe armed men arriving at their homes.

If these accounts prove accurate, the issue goes well beyond ordinary political rivalry. It points to a deeper question about who actually exercises authority in the province and how effectively the provincial administration controls its own law enforcement.

An Unusual Political Paradox

Scenes like these usually unfold in provinces governed by an opposing party. In such cases, administrations often use state power to block protests or restrict political activity. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa presents a different picture. Here, members of the ruling party are the ones reporting action against them.

This paradox sharpens a pressing question. If the governing party’s own legislators and workers feel unsafe, how much practical control do the provincial government and police really hold? The answer matters not only for PTI but for every citizen who relies on the state for protection.

What the Law Requires

The rule of law in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as anywhere else, rests on a clear principle. Authorities must act against a person only on the basis of an identifiable legal violation, credible evidence and established procedure. If a worker or lawmaker has broken the law, police should register a case, present evidence and place the matter before a court.

Pre-emptive arrests carried out merely on the fear of a future protest do not meet this standard. Neither do night-time raids on homes or actions that people describe as abductions or forced disappearances. Such measures undermine the very legal order they claim to protect.

Authorities should order an impartial investigation into every reported incident. Officials cannot simply dismiss each allegation as political rhetoric. Where an action followed the law, the government should explain its legal basis openly. Where any official or other party overstepped legal limits, investigators must identify those responsible and hold them to account.

Transparency here serves everyone. It protects genuine law enforcement from false accusations, and it protects citizens from unlawful treatment.

A Province Already Under Strain

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa already faces a heavy burden of challenges. The province continues to struggle with law and order, terrorism, administrative weakness and political tension. In this environment, intimidating political workers or leaving them in a state of uncertainty will likely deepen public unease rather than calm it.

Restoring the rule of law in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa therefore demands clear action from the provincial government. It must assert its constitutional and administrative authority, keep the police out of political disputes and guarantee the legal rights of all citizens.

The burden does not fall on the government alone. Both the government and the opposition should pursue protest and political disagreement through constitutional channels. Public trust in state institutions will return only when people see the law applied equally to everyone, regardless of party affiliation.

Ultimately, the credibility of governance in the province depends on this principle. A strong commitment to the rule of law in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa can ease tensions, rebuild confidence in institutions and show that no individual or group stands above the law.
