Newly Elected Supreme Court Bar President Urges Quick End to Emergency in KP

PESHAWAR: Newly elected Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) president Syed Amjad Shah called on the government to keep the emergency and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa temporary and to restore the provincial government without delay. He made the demand while speaking to journalists at the Peshawar High Court.

Shah thanked the lawyers who trusted him with the office, and he singled out the Lawyers Forum for backing his campaign. He said the bar would work for the rule of law and the supremacy of the Constitution, and he added that his team is already pursuing measures to improve the working conditions of lawyers.

Shah said his organisation stands with democracy. He described the law and order situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as poor. The government has imposed an emergency in 12 districts to end terrorism, he said, but he insisted the measure must not become permanent.

Shah also commented on the judiciary. He called the resignation of judges a normal matter and said anyone who does not wish to perform the duties of a constitutional office can step down. He argued that the earlier method of appointing judges was flawed, and that the 26th and 27th amendments corrected it. He also defended the transfer of judges as a sound practice that should continue.
