PESHAWAR: Doctors have warned that thousands of cancer patients in KP could struggle to access treatment during the current fiscal year after the provincial government allocated only 200mn rupees for free cancer medicines in the 2026-27 budget.

Health experts described the allocation as insufficient to meet the growing needs of patients across the province. They said the available funds fall far short of the amount required to provide uninterrupted treatment and medicines.

More Than 1,500 Patients Await Free Medicines

According to medical professionals, at least 1,500 registered cancer patients are currently waiting for free medicines.

Doctors estimate that the allocated funds may cover treatment costs for only around 100 patients, leaving many others without access to essential medicines.

The situation has raised concerns among healthcare providers, who fear that many cancer patients in KP could face treatment delays or interruptions.

Doctors said the cost of cancer medicines has increased significantly over the past year.

According to healthcare sources, prices of several cancer drugs have risen by as much as 100 percent during the last 12 months. The increase has made treatment unaffordable for many low-income families.

Medical experts noted that cancer treatment often requires long-term medication and continuous monitoring, making financial support critical for patients.

Sources said the provincial government did not release all approved funds during the previous fiscal year.

As a result, several patients reportedly faced delays in receiving medicines and treatment.

Healthcare professionals warned that repeating such delays could worsen the challenges facing cancer patients in KP and place additional pressure on already vulnerable families.

Doctors Call for Increased Funding

Doctors stressed that cancer treatment remains one of the most expensive forms of healthcare. They urged the government to increase financial support and ensure timely release of allocated funds.

Health experts said the current budget allocation does not reflect the actual needs of cancer patients in KP. They warned that without additional resources, many patients may struggle to continue life-saving treatment.

The concerns come as healthcare providers seek greater government support to improve access to cancer care and ensure that patients receive medicines without interruption.
