KARACHI—Indian singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh recently shared surprising details about his past. He spoke openly to the Indian media about his difficult early days.
The 42-year-old star revealed a harsh truth about his childhood. His family faced severe financial hardships during those early years. These daunting challenges pushed him to work incredibly hard.
Diljit grew up in a below-average-income household. His family often lacked money for basic healthcare.
“We did not even have money to visit a doctor,” he recalled.
Despite this extreme poverty, Diljit always dreamed of wealth and fame. He finally released his first album, Ishq Da Uda Ada, in 2002. Shortly after the release, people approached his company for event bookings. They wanted him to perform at a local birthday party.

Building a Career on Small Gigs
Diljit accepted the offer and received his first payment. He instantly realized that live shows offered a clear path forward. From that day on, he never rejected a single gig.
He gladly accepted small offers of 5,000, 10,000, or 15,000 rupees. He traveled everywhere and performed day and night. He never said no to anyone.
Industry Reactions and Ultimate Success
Live performances quickly became his main source of income. These private events brought in a significant amount of money.

However, the Punjabi music industry had mixed reactions. Some senior artists strongly disliked performing at private weddings. They looked down upon singers who took such jobs.
Diljit ignored their opinions and kept working hard. He successfully built his career from small birthday parties to massive global arenas.
