Public Mandate Being Sold, Says Awami National Party; Terms KP Govt Performance ‘Zero’

CHARSADDA – Following the high-profile assassination of the distinguished religious scholar Sheikh-ul-Hadith Maulana Muhammad Idris, senator Aimal Wali Khan, President of the Awami National Party (ANP), has issued a scathing critique of the provincial and federal authorities, accusing them of gross incompetence and a lack of seriousness in governing Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

“A Government Obsessed with One Prisoner”

Speaking to the media, senator Khan expressed deep frustration over the current political climate, stating that the government’s priorities are dangerously misplaced.

  • Political Inertia: Khan remarked that for the past 12 years, an “unserious” leadership has been imposed on the province.
  • Narrow Focus: He claimed the provincial administration’s entire focus is centered on the release of a single prisoner rather than the welfare of the public.
  • Systemic Corruption: The ANP leader alleged multi-billion rupee scandals in the education, pharmaceutical, and tourism sectors and termed it evidence of systemic failure.

Security Crisis and the Killing of Maulana Idris

The assassination of Maulana Muhammad Idris in Charsadda serves as a grim backdrop to senators Khan’s remarks. He highlighted that while the province is in “tatters,” the security situation has reached a breaking point.

“The state’s mindset is not one of peace, development, or schools; it is one of terror, explosions, and kidnappings,” Khan asserted, noting that the martyrdom of a renowned scholar today is a direct reflection of this deteriorating safety.

The Death of Tourism in KP

Despite a government presentation highlighting the potential of the tourism sector, Khan argued that the industry cannot survive under the current conditions. He emphasized that regions stretching from Hazara and Naran to Chitral and Waziristan possess world-class natural beauty, but lack the basic infrastructure to support it.

According to Khan, foreign tourism—the primary driver of currency and economic growth—is impossible without:

  • Safety Guarantees: Tourists will not visit if they fear explosions or targeted attacks.
  • Infrastructure: A total lack of hospitals, functional roads, and even basic petrol facilities in scenic zones discourages international visitors.
  • Policy Shift: He called for a complete overhaul of state policies to show a “loving face” to the world instead of one defined by dread.

Demands for Accountability

Aimal Wali Khan concluded by demanding a serious government that prioritizes development over political “dramas”. As Charsadda mourns the loss of Maulana Idris, the ANP chief called for transparency and a decisive crackdown on the perpetrators of violence across the province.
