PESHAWAR – During a formal signing ceremony attended by KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Bank of Khyber and Pakhtunkhwa Energy Development Organization to facilitate the implementation of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa solarization project.

This flagship initiative, valued at approximately PKR 55 billion, aims to transition public buildings and low-income households to solar energy, providing sustainable relief from high electricity bills while promoting eco-friendly energy sources.Gandapur emphasized that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa solarization project reflects the government’s commitment to maximizing relief for citizens burdened by high electricity costs through sustainable energy solutions.

By converting public buildings and assisting households in adopting solar power, the project aims to reduce electricity expenses and the province’s reliance on traditional energy sources. Regions with high load-shedding will be prioritized to provide targeted relief to underserved communities across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.Under the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa solarization project, an estimated 13,000 government buildings, including hospitals, universities, police stations, prisons, tube wells, and government offices, will be converted to solar power.

This initiative is projected to save billions annually on electricity expenses. The public buildings solarization portion alone is estimated at PKR 20 billion, a significant investment in renewable energy infrastructure for the region.Additionally, the project will distribute solar systems to 130,000 low-income households, including 100,000 in settled districts and 30,000 in newly merged districts. The household solarization scheme, valued at around PKR 35 billion, will provide free solar systems to 65,000 families, with the remaining 65,000 households receiving a 50% subsidy.

This dual approach is intended to provide affordable, clean energy to households while also reducing the demand on the national power grid, positioning the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa solarization project as a model for sustainable energy in Pakistan.
