PESHAWAR: A Mari Petroleum Company Limited (MPCL) MI-8 helicopter crashed in North Waziristan on Saturday, resulting in the tragic deaths of six people, including three Russian pilots. Eight others sustained injuries in the incident.
The helicopter, carrying a total of 14 passengers and crew members, was providing transportation services in the Shiva block of Waziristan. According to MPCL officials, the aircraft experienced an engine failure while in flight over the Shewa Oil Field, leading to the subsequent crash.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the accident and immediately began rescue efforts. The injured passengers were evacuated to CMH Thal by helicopter for medical treatment. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, six individuals succumbed to their injuries.
Authorities have launched a thorough investigation into the cause of the helicopter crash. While initial findings point to an engine failure, investigators are examining all possible factors, including maintenance records, pilot training, and weather conditions.
The incident has prompted renewed focus on safety protocols and maintenance procedures within the oil and gas industry. MPCL has expressed its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and has vowed to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation.
