PESHAWAR—Pakistan’s Election Commission has given the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government three more weeks to complete legislation required for local government elections, adjourning the case until September 29.
A four-member commission led by Sindh member Nisar Durrani reviewed the case. Officials told the commission that delimitation remains suspended in seven KP districts.
The provincial government wants to hold local government elections across the province in a single phase. A cabinet committee is currently reviewing proposed changes to the local government law and has also examined systems used in other provinces.

During the hearing, a commission member accused the KP government of using delaying tactics and warned that the chief minister could be summoned.
Nisar Durrani said local government elections must take place, and the commission had several constitutional options to ensure the process moves forward. A Khyber Pakhtunkhwa member noted that any changes to the law could require authorities to repeat the delimitation process.
