PESHAWAR – A highly unusual controversy has hit Pakistan’s oldest seat of learning. Specifically, an administrative probe is underway after the shocking discovery of an unauthorized poultry farm operating inside the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of the Punjab.
The issue came to light after a video showing chickens housed inside the academic department started circulating online. According to university spokespersons, the director of the Electrical Engineering Department, Dr. Kamran, had been keeping and raising the chickens directly on the department’s premises.

Following the public uproar and the viral spread of the footage, Dr. Kamran reportedly cleared out the birds during the late-night hours in an attempt to remove the evidence. Furthermore, when the university’s security management team arrived to investigate the matter, the director flatly refused to provide any information regarding the removal of the birds.
Consequently, the central administration of Punjab University has issued a formal notice to Dr. Kamran demanding a written explanation. Official sources confirmed that the director had never sought or obtained the mandatory prior permission required to keep livestock or establish an aviary inside an academic building.

On the other hand, Dr. Kamran defended his actions during a brief conversation with local media representatives. He stated that the department had recently constructed a dedicated outdoor sitting area for female students. According to him, he only introduced the animals and birds to enhance the aesthetic beauty of the department’s student courtyard.
In conclusion, while the director claims the birds were meant for campus beautification, the university administration is treating the incident as a serious breach of protocol. The formal inquiry will determine whether disciplinary action will be taken against the department head for utilizing state academic property without authorization.
