PESHAWAR – Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi officially launched the “Community Drone Digital X” initiative. Popularly known as the KP Open Wi-Fi project, this landmark initiative aims to accelerate digital governance and provide modern facilities to citizens across the province.
Phase One Rollout in Peshawar
Initially, the government has rolled out the KP Open Wi-Fi project across the provincial capital, Peshawar. During this first phase, citizens can access free high-speed internet at major government offices. Furthermore, the service is fully operational at public hospitals and key public transport hubs.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony at the Chief Minister House in Peshawar, Chief Minister Afridi termed the initiative a major step forward. He said the government plans to expand the KP Open Wi-Fi project to all divisional headquarters. These areas include Abbottabad, Dera Ismail Khan, Mardan, Swat, Kohat, and Bannu in the subsequent phases.
Empowering Youth
To support youth development, the government will extend the free internet facility to all public sector universities and colleges. Chief Minister Afridi emphasized that providing digital facilities remains a top priority. As a result, young people can leverage better opportunities in education, research, and digital entrepreneurship.
Meanwhile, the chief minister highlighted the digital divide in the merged tribal districts. He noted that many areas still lack basic mobile phone services. Additionally, the closure of border trade routes with Afghanistan has severely impacted local livelihoods. Therefore, digital connectivity is now critical for the economic rehabilitation of the tribal population.
