Pakistan’s First Yak Breeding and Research Project Approved in KPK to Save Endangered Species

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has approved the country’s first Yak Breeding and Research Project. This historic move aims to protect an endangered animal species.

Official documents show that the government will build a modern research station in Broghil. This remote valley sits close to the Pak-Afghan border. The new facility will span over 100 kanals of land. It aims to reverse the sharp drop in the local Yak population.

A Three-Year Plan for Conservation

The government wants to finish the yak breeding and research project within three years. Officials allocated 300 million PKR (30 crore) for the first phase. This initial phase will roll out over the next 12 months.

At first, the station will house 50 Yaks. Experts at the facility will focus on breed conservation. They will also work on genetic preservation and better growth methods.

Recent data shows why this project is urgent. The Yak population in KPK has dropped fast. Only 1,923 Yaks remain in the entire province today.

This decline hurts the mountain communities that depend on these animals. Currently, a single Yak costs between 350,000 PKR and 400,000 PKR. This price makes them a highly valuable asset for local farmers.

The Yak Breeding and Research Project will also help the local economy. It will create jobs in Broghil and nearby areas.

Yaks are vital resources in high-altitude regions. They provide:

  • High-quality meat and milk
  • Strong leather
  • Warm wool for clothing

By raising more yaks, the project will create stable livelihoods. It will bring new jobs to one of Pakistan’s most remote areas
