KARACHI – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued an urgent weather advisory for Sindh’s provincial capital. Officials warn citizens to brace for a severe Karachi coastal heatwave. Actual temperatures will hover between 40 and 42 centigrade.
However, a hazardous combination of trapping atmospheric moisture and dropping wind speeds will push the perceived “feels-like” temperature significantly higher.

Current localized weather patterns present a unique and oppressive threat to the coastal metropolis, according to PMD meteorologist Anjum Nazeer Zaigham. High humidity directly exacerbates heat conditions across the city. Zaigham stated that if humidity reaches 50 percent, the “feels-like” temperature can feel 8 to 10 degrees Celsius hotter than the actual reading.
“This temperature is quite alarming for Karachi,” he stressed.

Extreme temperatures usually accompany dry desert winds in typical summer heatwave scenarios. Zaigham noted that Karachi previously recorded a harsh peak temperature of 44.1 centigrade. However, exceptionally low humidity levels at that time resulted in a standard Loo (hot, dry summer wind) phenomenon.

The ongoing Karachi coastal heatwave is far more deceptive and dangerous. The sea breeze continues to pump moisture into the air without providing any cooling relief. This cycle locks the city in a high-humidity trap and severely limits the atmosphere’s ability to cool down.

Zaigham warned that this specific Karachi coastal heatwave system could significantly increase the risk of dehydration. The weather poses an immediate health risk to outdoor laborers, daily commuters, and vulnerable demographics like children and the elderly.

The Meteorological Department urges the public to follow these safety guidelines strictly to mitigate dangerous health impacts:
- Avoid Peak Sun Hours: Zaigham strongly urged the public to refrain from stepping outside between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Solar radiation and the heat index reach their highest points during these hours.
- Increase Hydration: Drink water and electrolyte-rich fluids constantly throughout the day. Regular drinking counteracts rapid, sweat-induced dehydration.
- Cover Up: Shield your head and face with a cap, light cloth, or umbrella whenever stepping outdoors. These items minimize direct sun exposure.
Local hospital administrations and civic authorities are bracing for potential heat-related emergencies as the city navigates this oppressive weather pattern.
