PDMA Issues GLOF Alert in KP as Melting Glaciers Threaten Five Districts

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) issued an urgent GLOF alert in KP today for five high-risk districts due to the increasing threat of glacial lake outburst floods. Intense rainfall and rising temperatures have significantly raised the possibility of rapid glacial melting in the northern belt.

Specifically, the PDMA identified Upper Chitral, Lower Chitral, Upper Dir, Swat, and Upper Kohistan as the most vulnerable regions. Consequently, the authority directed district administrations to implement emergency preparedness measures immediately to prevent loss of life.

Emergency Drills and Evacuation Plans

The GLOF alert in KP prompted the PDMA to instruct all relevant district administrations to conduct evacuation drills in high-risk areas. Furthermore, officials must ensure that evacuation centers in safe zones remain fully functional and equipped with necessary facilities. To enhance safety, the authority ordered the activation of early warning systems to alert local populations before a disaster strikes.

District officers received specific directions to continuously monitor sensitive glacial sites. Additionally, the PDMA emphasized the need for a “controlled discharge” strategy for glacial lakes if water levels reach critical limits. Therefore, the administration must keep residents in low-lying areas informed of every development to ensure a timely response.

Logistics and Public Safety Measures

To manage the situation following the GLOF alert in KP, the PDMA coordinated with the National Highway Authority (NHA) and Frontier Works Organization (FWO) for potential road closures. Specifically, rescue and emergency services must remain on high alert with machinery pre-positioned at strategic locations. Meanwhile, the PDMA strongly advised tourists and travelers to avoid unnecessary journeys toward these sensitive northern districts.

The authority also issued a stern warning to the general public regarding movement near rivers and streams. Specifically, the advisory cautioned that fast-moving floodwaters can easily sweep away vehicles. Consequently, residents in low-lying areas should adopt extra precautionary measures during this period of heightened risk.

Contact and Monitoring

Ultimately, the PDMA confirmed that its Emergency Operation Center remains fully operational around the clock. Citizens can report any emergency or seek assistance by contacting the PDMA helpline at 1700. By maintaining this constant oversight, the provincial government aims to mitigate the impact of flash floods and landslides triggered by the changing weather patterns.
