The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has initiated a massive project to establish a New Peshawar International Airport.

PESHAWAR – The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government is planning a massive project to establish a New Peshawar International Airport. The project aims to resolve long-standing security, traffic, and urban expansion challenges by moving the current airport to a more secure location.

Commissioner Peshawar chaired a high-level meeting on Tuesday to finalize the preliminary homework for this landmark infrastructure project. Officials confirmed that the provincial government will receive the formal proposal soon for final approval.

2,500 Acres Required for the New Aviation Hub

According to briefing documents, the New Peshawar International Airport requires approximately 2,500 acres of land. Authorities are prioritizing a location away from dense civilian populations to ensure maximum safety and operational efficiency.

The meeting participants agreed that the existing airport location creates significant bottlenecks. It hinders the city’s traffic flow and limits urban development due to strict security zones and height restrictions for nearby buildings.

Potential Sites Under Evaluation

The government is currently scouting several locations for the New Peshawar International Airport. The committee is evaluating the following areas:

  • Matani
  • Azakhel
  • Surezai
  • Mamun Khatki
  • Naguman
  • Bara Akakhel

Strategic Timeline and Oversight

The newly formed committee will conduct detailed surveys of the shortlisted sites. Their primary task is to assess land suitability, environmental impact, and connectivity to the main city.

“Moving the airport is essential for the region’s growth,” an official stated. “It will provide modern facilities, enhance security, and offer a better gateway to the province.”

The committee must present its initial survey findings to Chief Minister Sohail Afridi and the Chief Secretary within three weeks. A follow-up meeting is scheduled to review the progress and finalize the site selection.
