PESHAWAR – The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has started consultations on colleges privatisation in KP, aiming to improve the performance of public educational institutions and reduce heavy financial burdens on the provincial budget.

Officials assured that the basic rights of teachers and students will be protected, while discussions on tuition fee structures are also underway.

According to recommendations prepared by the Higher Education Department, colleges privatisation in KP will be carried out through partnerships with the private sector. The proposal includes 55 government colleges across the province, with the objective of ensuring better facilities, availability of faculty, and improved academic standards.

Institutions under consideration include Government Degree Colleges in Abbottabad, Bannu, Battagram, Dera Ismail Khan, Kohat, Kohistan, Kurram, Malakand, Shangla, South Waziristan, Peshawar, Nowshera, Karak, Haripur, and Swabi. Several girls’ colleges such as those in Chughalpura, Khanpur, Pirpai, Topi, and Jandola are also part of the plan.

Officials said the initiative will allow the government to share responsibility with private partners, thereby reducing expenses while ensuring educational quality. They emphasised that colleges privatisation in KP will not compromise the rights of staff and students, and fee-related decisions will be finalised after detailed consultation.

Sources confirmed that the provincial government intends to run these colleges under a public-private partnership model to strengthen academic infrastructure and maintain quality standards.
