PESHAWAR – Terrorists using drones in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) have raised fresh concerns among law enforcement and legal experts, as officials confirm that militant groups have adopted drone technology for sabotage in the merged tribal and southern districts.

Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hamid confirmed that terrorists have used drones in areas including North Waziristan. He said, “We detected multiple instances of drone activity linked to militant groups. We have responded by deploying surveillance drones across all districts.” He further stated, “We have also initiated the process of acquiring thermal drones to strengthen night-time monitoring.”

Meanwhile, the police have started deploying anti-drone systems at sensitive locations, especially ahead of Muharram. According to Hamid, “We aim to safeguard key government sites and public gatherings through these systems.”

Moreover, the rise in drone activity has triggered public and legal concern. Advocate Muhammad Hamdan recently filed a petition in the Peshawar High Court, demanding legislation to regulate drone camera usage. He told the court, “Without proper oversight, anyone can operate a drone. This not only poses a threat to national security but also invades people’s privacy.”

In response, the court admitted the petition but has not yet announced a ruling. Legal observers believe that the lack of drone laws exposes citizens to unchecked surveillance and law enforcement to tactical disadvantages.

Clearly, terrorists using drones in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has forced police to adopt rapid countermeasures. At the same time, civil society is calling for a balance between public safety and the protection of individual rights. Until lawmakers introduce effective regulations, the threat posed by terrorists using drones in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will likely continue to escalate.
