PESHAWAR- Two special security reports from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police and intelligence agencies were presented at a key federal cabinet meeting chaired by the prime minister in Islamabad.

Sources said the meeting was expected to review in detail the highly concerning governance and security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

According to the reports, the number of terrorist attacks in the province increased over the past two years. The continuing rise in terrorism has become a serious and worrying challenge for the province’s security situation.

The reports said the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) faced a severe shortage of specially trained personnel. Despite being a dedicated counterterrorism force, the CTD depended on the regular police for staffing.

The CTD’s district offices and operational facilities were also described as inadequate compared with its infrastructure and operational requirements.

The special report said a dedicated, modern and robust infrastructure for the CTD was urgently needed to respond to rising terrorism.

The reports expressed serious concern over increasing terrorist incidents, institutional weaknesses and the state of governance in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. They also examined major gaps in the capacity of security institutions, provincial preparedness and counterterrorism measures, as well as the causes of the deteriorating law-and-order situation and the responsibilities involved.
