Polio Oversight Board Delegation Reaffirms Commitment to Help Pakistan Eradicate Polio

PESHAWAR – A high-level delegation from the Polio Oversight Board (POB) of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative has arrived in Pakistan to assess current eradication efforts.

The international representatives met with senior leadership from the country’s anti-polio program at the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) in Islamabad. During the strategic session, local officials delivered a comprehensive briefing detailing the country’s recent progress, ongoing vaccination campaigns, and targeted surveillance protocols.

International Leaders Express Strong Confidence

The visiting members explicitly expressed their complete confidence in the operational framework of Pakistan’s anti-polio program. They reaffirmed the global community’s unwavering commitment to provide financial and logistical support until the virus is completely eliminated.

The delegation highly praised the Government of Pakistan for its effective leadership and robust political will, noting that state-level ownership remains essential to overcome the final hurdles in the eradication campaign.

The experts declared the next six months a decisive window for global public health. This critical timeline will determine whether health agencies can permanently interrupt wild poliovirus transmission in Pakistan and across the globe. Along with direct eradication measures, the POB representatives emphasized the urgent need to strengthen Pakistan’s routine immunization networks. This dual strategy ensures that children receive long-term protection against various preventable childhood diseases.

Frontline Health Workers Receive Global Praise

As part of their official assessment, the board members held interactive sessions with female frontline health workers at the National Emergency Operations Centre. The visitors listened to firsthand accounts and personal experiences from the field, gaining insight into the challenges workers face during vaccination drives.

The delegates commended the extraordinary bravery, dedication, and resilience of these vaccinators. They emphasized that female frontline workers serve as the backbone of the entire initiative, playing a crucial role in delivering life-saving drops to high-risk mobile populations and securing a polio-free future for the next generation.
