ISLAMABAD – A devastating suicide attack ripped through the Imambargah Khadijatul Kubra in Islamabad killed at least 31 people and wounding more than 160 others.
The blast occurred during Friday prayers, a time when the mosque was packed with worshippers. Witnesses and security officials report that the death toll may rise as several victims remain in critical condition.
One of the deadliest suicide bombings in Islamabad, the modus operandi has stark resemblance to the Islamic State, there have been at least seven intelligence based operations over the years where ISKP affiliates have been apprehended before they could have targeted Shia mosques… https://t.co/2uxYOFg5UU

How the Attack Unfolded
Security guards intercepted the attacker at the entrance of the mosque, leading to a brief exchange of gunfire. Despite their efforts, the bomber managed to run inside the compound and detonate his explosives.
- Impact: The massive explosion shattered the windows of the three-story building and caused significant structural damage to nearby homes.
- Casualties: Among the dead and injured are children and several security guards who attempted to stop the assailant.
- Heroism at the Gate: Authorities believe the guards’ confrontation likely prevented the bomber from reaching the main prayer hall, which would have resulted in an even higher casualty count.

Emergency Response and Security
The Islamabad administration immediately declared an emergency at all major medical facilities, including the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) and Polyclinic Hospital.
- Overwhelmed Hospitals: PIMS reached full capacity shortly after the blast, forcing rescue teams to divert the injured to hospitals in neighboring Rawalpindi.
- Security Lockdown: Army troops, paramilitary Rangers, and police cordoned off the Tarlai suburb to conduct forensic investigations and search for potential accomplices.

Political and Militant Context
While no group has formally claimed responsibility, police sources have linked the attack to Fitna al-Khawarij (a term used by the Pakistani government for the banned TTP).
This atrocity follows a period of heightened alert in the capital after a suicide bombing at the Islamabad District Judicial Complex in November 2025. President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the “cowardly” act, while opposition leaders have criticized the government for a serious security lapse in the federal capital.
