Supreme Court Orders Imran Khan Medical Checkup

The Supreme Court of Pakistan issued a directive on Thursday for an Imran Khan medical checkup to take place before February 16. A two-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, presided over the hearing regarding the Toshakhana criminal case trial.

Chief Justice Afridi emphasized that health is a priority. “The issue of health is most important, and interference is necessary on this matter,” the Chief Justice remarked. He added that the court wants to know the government’s official stance on the prisoner’s well-being.

Medical Team and Eye Examination

The court specifically ordered an eye examination for the PTI founder. A specialized team of doctors will perform the Imran Khan medical checkup to ensure his physical fitness.

While Barrister Salman Safdar requested that a family member stay present during the checkup, the Supreme Court rejected this plea. However, the Attorney General assured the court that the state recognizes its responsibility. “Providing health facilities is the state’s duty; if a prisoner is not satisfied, the state will take action,” the Attorney General stated.

Communication with Children

Beyond the Imran Khan medical checkup, the bench addressed the father-child relationship. The court ordered the government to facilitate a telephone call between Imran Khan and his children before February 16.

Chief Justice Afridi noted the importance of this issue, stating, “The issue of telephone calls with children is also vital.” He expressed confidence in the administration, lightheartedly noting that “the government is in a good mood today.”

Jail Conditions and Facilities

Barrister Salman Safdar submitted a report during the hearing. The report confirms that the PTI founder expressed satisfaction with the following in jail:

  • Security measures and personal safety.
  • Food and beverage facilities.

The defense also requested that the court provide certain books to the former Prime Minister. The Supreme Court noted that if doctors recommend reading as part of his routine, the authorities should provide the books.

The court has adjourned the matter, trusting the government to complete the Imran Khan medical checkup and family communication within the specified deadline.
