Peshawar Police has decided to end half a century of violent tribal conflicts through mediation. Specifically, the city established the Peshawar Enmity Resolution Desk to eliminate weapon culture and resolve intergenerational feuds. Consequently, this initiative offers a new beacon of hope for peace by shifting focus from legal battles to social reconciliation.
A Legacy of Bloodshed and Loss
In areas like Badber and Matani, decades-long enmities pass from one generation to the next. Unfortunately, these conflicts have swallowed nearly 400 lives already. Furthermore, in Shahpur and Chamkani, old rivalries resulted in the deaths of 50 people. Despite the passage of time, the emotional wounds remain fresh for the survivors.
Arsala Khan, a resident of Badaber, lost 17 family members to these feuds. He explained that his generation picked up weapons instead of pens. Moreover, his family fled their village seven years ago to escape constant fear. Therefore, Arsala strongly supports the desk to ensure his family can finally live like normal citizens.
A Multi-Disciplinary Approach to Peace
The Peshawar Enmity Resolution Desk incorporates a diverse group of experts to address conflicts from multiple angles. For instance, the desk includes:
- Members of the Criminology Department.
- Experts from Peace and Conflict Studies.
- Retired Police Officers.
- Renowned Religious Scholars.
- Female Social Leaders.
Because of this inclusive structure, the police can solve disputes through social and religious lenses.
From Bullets to Dialogue
Senior police officials confirmed that this is the first desk of its kind. Additionally, they stated that the Peshawar Enmity Resolution Desk will implement effective strategies based on regional customs. Authorities added that the desk will function as an active platform rather than a mere filing office.
It is expected that the initiative will heal families by replacing “gun culture” with productive conversation. The police believes that if influential sectors unite, trust will replace fear. As a result, the children may finally inherit peace instead of hatred.
