Pakistan Flood Preparedness: The Warning Always Comes, The Readiness Never Does

PESHAWAR – The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) alert for several northern districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The warning comes in response to rising temperatures and fast-paced glacial melting.

According to a PDMA statement released on 4 July, the ongoing heatwave is causing glaciers to melt rapidly. This has increased the risk of GLOFs and flash floods. The alert applies to high-risk districts including Chitral, Upper and Lower Dir, Swat, and Kohistan.

PDMA has directed district administrations to stay vigilant. Authorities must monitor sensitive sites around the clock and carry out evacuation drills in vulnerable communities. Each district should identify safe shelters, stock emergency supplies, and fully deploy rescue teams.

Residents living near rivers, streams, and low-lying areas must avoid unnecessary movement. Authorities have also advised the public not to cross or drive through fast-flowing water during the alert.

Tourists visiting northern regions should remain alert and follow official weather updates. PDMA urges all travelers to take recommended precautions for their safety.

To address potential road blockages due to floods or landslides, PDMA has instructed the National Highway Authority (NHA), Frontier Works Organisation (FWO), and the Communication and Works (C&W) Department to prepare for quick response. These departments must plan ahead to ensure roads stay clear and transportation remains safe.

PDMA’s Emergency Operations Centre is fully active. Citizens can report emergencies or seek help by calling the 1700 helpline.

To limit damage, the authority has also launched a public awareness campaign. This initiative aims to educate communities on flood preparedness and reduce the impact of potential glacial lake outburst flood.
