PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government is planning a new teacher licensing and accreditation system to improve education quality at the primary and secondary levels.
The Elementary and Secondary Education Department has created a six-phase plan, which will begin in July.

Under this plan, the province will form a dedicated council. This council will evaluate teachers’ professional skills and issue licenses and accreditations. The move aims to raise teaching standards and ensure qualified educators across schools.
In the first phase, officials will draft and submit a specific PC-1 to set up the Teacher Licensing and Accreditation Council. The Director Curriculum and Teacher Education, Director Elementary and Secondary Education, and the Education Advisor will handle this task. The Special Secretary for Development in the Education Department will supervise the entire process.

Next, in the second phase, the department will obtain revenue clearance for the PC-1. After that, it will seek administrative approval in the third phase. In the fourth phase, authorities will prepare a licensing and accreditation policy in consultation with regulatory bodies.
The fifth phase will define licensing criteria and timelines for teachers at the primary, secondary, and higher secondary levels. Finally, in the sixth phase, the government will launch a pilot project in selected districts. This pilot will include teacher licensing exams and portfolio-based assessments.

Government officials believe that this new teacher licensing and accreditation system will introduce a transparent method to evaluate teacher performance. Moreover, they expect it to bring meaningful reforms and significantly improve the province’s education standards.
