PESHAWAR: Authorities have proposed holding the local body elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa after Eid-ul-Azha, May 27, due to the “deteriorating security situation.”
Official sources confirmed on Friday that the government will announce the election schedule only after security conditions improve. This proposal follows the formal conclusion of the previous local government’s tenure on March 15, 2026.
Local Government in KP: Can It Be Active and Effective?
Government sources identified heightened regional tensions as a primary factor for the delay. Issues involving Pakistan military operation in Afghanistan and the US and Israel war on Iran have created challenges that prevent immediate polling. Security agencies have reportedly warned of potential threats to public safety during large-scale electoral activities. Consequently, the provincial government decided to wait for a more stable environment later this year.
Furthermore, the province is transitioning to a new local government system. The government plans to conduct the upcoming elections under this updated framework to ensure better governance at the grassroots level. While the official schedule remains pending, various political parties have already started inviting applications from potential candidates.
Local Government In Pakistan Has Failed — Here’s The Real Reason Why
Administrative Transition to Bureaucracy
Following the expiration of the local bodies’ terms, deputy commissioners across the province have formally taken charge of local government affairs. A recent notification authorized bureaucrats to exercise administrative powers to prevent a governance vacuum. In Peshawar, the deputy commissioner now handles the powers previously held by the city mayor.
This interim arrangement will remain in place until the establishment of the new local government. Assistant Commissioners and Tehsil Municipal Officers are jointly managing Tehsil-level affairs. Meanwhile, the administration is working to retrieve government assets from outgoing representatives to ensure a transparent transition.

Despite the proposed delay, the political atmosphere in the province remains active. Political parties are currently vetting candidates and preparing their district-level organizational structures. They aim to be fully prepared for the contest once the security situation allows for a formal announcement.
Finally, the provincial government continues to monitor the security landscape in consultation with relevant institutions. Any final decision on the polling dates will prioritize the safety of the citizens and the integrity of the democratic process. The administration remains committed to holding the KP local body elections 2026 in a peaceful and secure manner.
