PESHAWAR – The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has launched operation to identify and regulate illegal bus terminals and freight transport hubs across the province.
Local government bodies have been directed to submit detailed reports within 20 days, listing the exact locations, addresses and operational status of all transport stations.
A notification issued by the Local Government (LG) Department categorised the matter as urgent and instructed all Tehsil Municipal Administrations (TMAs) and the Capital Metropolitan Government to prepare data on both legal and illegal terminals. The reports will inform policy recommendations on regularisation.
Field visits and photographic documentation are part of the process, while coordination with Deputy Commissioners and law enforcement agencies is expected to ensure accuracy. “This is a governance and public safety matter. Unregulated terminals contribute to congestion, tax evasion, and lack of commuter protection,” said a senior official told the Peshawar Post.
Officials also intend to review zoning regulations, with the possibility of relocating some terminals operating in violation of land use policies. The campaign aims to streamline urban transport, improve safety, and formalise revenue channels.
Earlier surveys had indicated a growing number of informal transport hubs in urban centres, particularly in Peshawar, leading to civic complaints. The crackdown is expected to be followed by licensing, regulatory enforcement and fines where necessary.
The provincial government has emphasised that the operation will be executed with transparency and fairness. All data collected will be shared with relevant departments before policy actions are finalised.
