PESHAWAR – The temporary ceasefire between Pakistan and Afghanistan for Eid al-Fitr has concluded. While authorities report minor surface-level actions, large-scale operations have stopped. No major incidents of terrorism occurred during this period. Officials now expect the Torkham border to open for the repatriation of Afghan refugees, signaling a potential end to recent border closures.
Strategic Buffer Zones
In the absence of immediate provocations, Pakistan finds no justification for large-scale military action. According to unconfirmed reports, Pakistan has converted specific areas into buffer zones to prevent attacks.
The previous border closures had interrupted the repatriation of Afghan refugees. With the improvement in the security situation, the government is resuming this process. Reports from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa indicate that operations against undocumented migrants have intensified.

Phased Closure of Refugee Camps
The provincial government has started a systematic plan to close refugee settlements. Under security protocols, migrants are being moved from prisons and detention centers to the border.
The administration has outlined the following stages:
- Phase One: Authorities have closed 42 camps across the province.
- Phase Two: Preparations are underway to shut down 9 additional camps.
- Total Scale: The government plan involves the elimination of over 50 camps in total.
Experts suggest these measures will alter the security situation.

Economic Pressures and Policy Shifts
The burden on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has increased as Afghan refugees move to the province from other parts of the country. With the conclusion of Ramadan and Eid and the arrival of favorable weather, the logistics for repatriation are now in place.
Observers note that the previous lack of official interest must change. Beyond current policies, a clear government announcement is required to remove any expectation of further stays. This would ensure that repatriation remains the only path available to the migrants.
