Flash Floods in KP Kill 307 As Government Launches Relief Operations

PESHAWAR – Flash floods in KP have killed 307 people in the past 48 hours. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) confirmed the deaths and reported large-scale destruction.

PDMA said the floods killed 279 men, 15 women, and 13 children. Another 23 people suffered injuries, including 17 men, 4 women, and 2 children. The floods also damaged 74 houses. Of these, 63 were partially destroyed and 11 completely demolished.

The hardest-hit districts include Swat, Buner, Bajaur, Torghar, Mansehra, Shangla, and Battagram. Buner recorded 184 deaths, the highest in the province. Officials warned that heavy rain may continue until 21 August, raising the risk of more losses.

Monsoon-hit areas in Malakand Division — Buner, Shangla, Lower Dir, and Lower and Middle Swat — remain under heavy floods. Continuous rains and cloudbursts have turned these districts into danger zones. Non-monsoon areas such as upper Swat beyond Fatepur and Madyan, the Kumrat Valley in Upper Dir, and the Chitral region remain safe so far. Experts fear that if monsoon rains hit these fragile areas, the damage will be worse due to hotter summers, less winter snowfall, and melting glaciers.

Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur called a special meeting to review the crisis. Chief Secretary Shahab Ali Shah directed commissioners and deputy commissioners to inspect the affected districts. He asked them to meet residents and monitor relief work. He ordered medical camps, cooked food, and clean water for the displaced. Machinery is now clearing roads, and the government has released funds for urgent repairs.

The Local Government Department also issued emergency orders. It placed all union council and neighborhood council staff on high alert. Tehsil administrations must file daily reports. Municipal machinery has been diverted to flood relief. The government canceled all municipal officers’ leaves until further notice.

Authorities stressed the need for quick coordination. They said teams must restore roads and bridges, distribute non-food items, and support families who lost their homes. Officials warned that worsening weather could intensify the flash floods in KP.
