PESHAWAR – Peshawar’s streets are becoming more dangerous. In just 40 days, over 60 people have been killed, 80 injured, and at least 30 cases of street robberies have been reported. Residents say they no longer feel safe, as the crime rate in Peshawar continues to rise.
Official records show 5,925 criminal incidents from 1 January to 9 February — over a thousand more than the same period last year. Police have arrested suspects and recovered stolen goods in several cases, but the crime rate in Peshawar remains high. Authorities point to growing poverty, unemployment, and frustration as key reasons behind the surge.
Rise in killings and street crime
Killings remain a major concern. This year, over 60 people have been murdered, often due to property disputes, financial disagreements, and personal conflicts. Last year, 142 people were killed in the same period. The number of injured has also increased due to violent attacks.
Street crimes are rising sharply. While armed robberies have slightly decreased, street mugging is becoming more common. At least 28 cases have been reported this year, compared to 19 last year.
Vehicle thefts double
Vehicle thefts have doubled. In 2024, five cars were stolen in the first 40 days—this year, the number has reached 10. Carjackings have also surged, with seven reported cases compared to two last year. Motorcycle theft is following a similar pattern, with 21 bikes stolen and 15 snatched at gunpoint. Experts say these figures further highlight the worsening crime rate in Peshawar.
Child abduction cases decline
Not all crimes are increasing. Child abductions have slightly declined, with only one reported case so far, compared to two last year. No missing persons cases have been reported in the city.
For many in Peshawar, daily life is changing. Residents are avoiding walking alone at night, keeping valuables out of sight, and double-checking their door locks. Police insist they are working to control the crime rate in Peshawar, but for those who have already suffered losses, these promises offer little comfort.
