PSL matches in Peshawar gained formal approval during a high-level apex committee meeting at Corps Headquarters Peshawar, where federal, provincial, and military leaders reviewed the security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and agreed on coordinated steps to counter terrorism, improve governance, and strengthen development planning.

Chief Minister Sohail Afridi chaired the session, which Federal Interior Minister and Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, the national security adviser, the corps commander Peshawar, and senior civil and military officials attended. Participants paid tribute to civilians and security personnel killed in terrorist attacks and reaffirmed their commitment to collective action against militancy.

The meeting confirmed that PSL matches in Peshawar will take place this year. Speaking at Imran Khan Cricket Stadium, Mohsin Naqvi said Peshawar would receive “good news today” regarding the Pakistan Super League. He said, “Sixty percent of Pakistan’s national cricket team comes from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa,” and added, “The province has deep cricket talent that deserves more opportunities.”

He announced the formation of two teams from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, saying the move would “create more space for emerging players.” He praised the Counter Terrorism Department, saying, “CTD has delivered strong results, and it is important to acknowledge that effort.” He added, “Pakistan comes first, and everything else follows.”

On international cricket matters, Naqvi said the decision to boycott the World Cup match against India aimed “to show solidarity and respect for Bangladesh.” He added, “We did not impose any conditions, and everyone remains free to express their opinion.”

The apex committee approved the immediate enforcement of a provincial governance model in Malakand Division under the supervision of provincial police and administrative institutions. Authorities will later extend this model in phases to Khyber, Orakzai, and Kurram districts. The meeting also formed a special sub-committee, led by the chief minister, to monitor development projects, review security operations, create alternative livelihood opportunities, and address the needs of temporarily displaced people. The committee will meet monthly and include federal, provincial, and military representatives.

The meeting agreed to strengthen coordination between the federation and the province to ensure alignment on counterterrorism policy. Participants also approved continued action against illegal SIM cards, explosives, extortion, and non-custom paid vehicles, alongside employment initiatives aimed at reducing youth radicalisation.

Addressing the forum, Chief Minister Sohail Afridi said, “I will never seek support for personal or political gain.” He added, “I am ready to engage with anyone for the welfare of the province and its people.” He also said, “Decisions taken under pressure, threats, or behind closed doors remain unacceptable to me.”

Participants concluded the meeting by reaffirming their joint commitment to security, governance, and development across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
